Recently I was in California for my sister-in-laws wedding (aka the person on the Bowie Chiropractic exercise sheets.)
My part was easy. Keep the younger kids busy and chat with people.
Day one my responses were as follows: Kevin. Chiropractor. Wife’s sister. Illinois. No, not a Chicago suburb- but close (smile).
Day two: Kevin. Chiropractor. Wife’s sister. Champaign, Illinois. Not really southern Illinois (smile). More central.
Day three: Kevin. Chiropractor. Wife’s sister. Champaign-Urbana home to the University of Illinois.
By day four everyone knew my name, what I “do”, and how i knew the bride. But what they didn’t know was how much I enjoy central Illinois.
I love that we are close to Chicago. I love that in one day I can see patients that are farmers, Big Ten Athletes or super smart computer programmers. I love that I know my wife and I are too tired to travel across the country with our three kids any time soon – but we can still “get away from it all” by heading to Kickapoo or Homer or Bloomington. We may not have seals or surfing right outside our back door- but that’s ok. Because even if we did, my logical side tells me it’s not smart to put on a giant wet suit, hop in the ocean and hope a shark realizes I’m not just another seal out for a swim.
Champaign-Urbana is a great place to call home. And I love it. Because there really aren’t that many places, with people as kind as the ones we have around here.
